Mackenzie backstage at Season Three Performance.
Seats are filled, stage lights are ready, hair and makeup is touched up and last minute costume adjustments are made. Since I can remember, I have loved the performance part of dance. Whether or not I have someone in the audience, I love the anticipation of getting ready and showing off the hard work I've put in. In my five seasons with an audience, due to busy schedules and lack of family nearby, I've only had a few attendees at our shows to see me; however, I still love show days so much.
I'm just as excited to get on stage today as I was when I was five and showing off what I'm sure were exceptional dance skills to "Prince Ali" in fantastic pink shiny harem pants and matching top. Being in front of an audience, with lights on me, my normal shyness (you will NEVER get me to do karaoke for example) is gone. My butterflies disappear and I feel simply happy.
The backstage part of show days have also become favorite portions of my OnStage experience. From costume adjustments to more and more elaborate hair-dos by my talented fellow dancers, backstage is a hub of activity (plus enjoying the occasional snack that we OnStagers have been known to bring and enjoy!). Show day brings us all together; whether we met once at placement day or have been in pieces together for numerous seasons, we all share the same excitement of getting on that stage yet again.
As a new season approaches, despite my almost always hectic schedule, I know each and every piece I choose to be in and each and every rehearsal I go to is beyond worth it. From meeting great people to the always exciting show day, I look forward to my 6th season with OnStage, ready to push myself in my dance abilities and have my moment in the spotlight!
