I just had my first set of rehearsals for OnStage Season Eight and I’m so glad I decided to try something outside of my comfort zone this time. Even though I started dancing as a toddler, I haven’t had much experience with props. When I saw Christine [Zimmermann] practicing with a rope, I knew I had to be in her dance.
We plunged into practicing with the ropes right from the start of rehearsal. There was a lot of “How did you end up like that?” and “I think I need a longer rope” but the more we danced with it wrapped around our right foot, the more comfortable we all got. There’s also a sense of satisfaction with thwacking the floor with the rope. I just imagined my frustrations sitting there on the ground and let loose – a new form of dance therapy!
I just watched the practice video and it seems surreal that I was dancing with a rope at OnStage and now I’m sitting in a cubicle planning my lab work 13 hours later. If only every day of the week was Sunday at OnStage. We all have a lot of work to do, but we definitely accomplished a lot in that first hour despite the fears of rope burn.
